The Million Dollar Duck is a documentary that focuses on the strange and wonderful world of the Federal Duck Stamp Contest, the only juried art competition run by the U.S. government. This film explores the eccentric nature of the contestants who enter each year for a chance at wildlife art stardom, while also reflecting upon the history and challenges facing the continued existence of this successful conservation program.
The Million Dollar Duck was an official selection for the 2016 Slamdance Film Festival and won the Audience Award and Grand Jury Award for Best Documentary Feature at the festival.
Calvin Carter, local artist and Port Neches-Groves High School Art Teacher, was a finalist in the Federal Duck Stamp Contest the year the documentary was filmed. When asked why this film was important, Calvin shared, “I think its very important for the public and artists to see this film not only for the artwork, but for the house of research artists have to put into this show to compete. It’s not a show just about duck stamps but about the level of work it takes to be a successful artist in any genre.”
This program is presented in support of the special exhibition Conservation Art: Federal Duck Stamps and Printson view at the Stark Museum of Art through January 4, 2020.
