Two new solo exhibitions opening at AMSET


(Beaumont, TX; February 16, 2018) The Art Museum of Southeast Texas (AMSET) hosts

SHAUN ROBERTS: Rebels and Renegades and ANTHONY SONNENBERG: Still Stage, Set Life March 17 – June 3, 2018 in the main galleries.

Artists Anthony Sonnenberg and Shaun Roberts will be at AMSET on Friday, March 23, 2018, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. for a free and open to the public reception.  Both artists will present gallery talks, enlightening guests on the inspiration behind their work.  Complimentary light appetizers and beverages will be provided.

Sonnenberg lives and works in Houston and is represented by Conduit Gallery in Dallas. Sonnenberg has been featured in solo exhibitions at Art Palace, Conduit Gallery, Lawndale Art Center, and the Old Jail Art Center.  Still Stage, Set Life will showcase a site-specific stage and throne installation rife with Baroque-style accoutrements.  After Sonnenberg’s gallery talk, there will be a drag performance by the renowned Blackberri and Co. from Houston.  A documentary film, produced by Carrithers Studio in Houston, will feature Sonnenberg’s creation of AMSET’s site-specific installation and will be on view throughout the duration of the exhibition.

Roberts lives in Nacogdoches, Texas, where he works as Assistant Professor of Painting at Stephen F. Austin State University.  Roberts has exhibited at numerous institutions throughout the United States and is a 2012 Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant recipient. Rebels and Renegades, Roberts’ first solo museum exhibition, will feature his recent oil paintings often inspired by Italian Renaissance and Baroque masters, including Caravaggio. This exhibition will be accompanied by a gallery guide with a critical essay written by Jill Carrington, Ph.D., Professor of Art History at Stephen F. Austin State University.
