Big Thicket National Preserve Announces
Summer 2018 Ranger-led Program Schedule

School is almost out! What do you and your family have planned this summer? The staff at Big Thicket National Preserve would like to invite you to explore your local national preserve by taking advantage the many ranger-led programs being offered this summer.

From canoe trips on Village Creek to full moon hikes and special summertime youth programs, park rangers will offer a variety of free programs. Junior Ranger Days, held every Friday this July will engage young people in hands-on activities as we explore a new topic each week. Some programs require participants to pre-register. Be sure to consult the 2018 Summer Ranger-led Program Schedule for details. Information on all our public programs is available on our website at, or follow us on Facebook at

Big Thicket National Preserve is located in southeast Texas, near the city Beaumont and 75 miles northeast of Houston. The preserve consists of nine land units and six water corridors encompassing more than 113,000 acres. The Big Thicket, often referred to as a “biological crossroads,” is a transition zone between four distinct vegetation types – the moist eastern hardwood forest, the southwestern desert, the southeastern swamp, and the central prairies. Species from all of these different vegetation types come together in the thicket, exhibiting a variety of vegetation and wildlife that has received national interest.
