What’s He Doing in There? Photobombing in the Italian Renaissance

Azar Rejaie, University of Houston-Downtown

Wednesday April 18

Reception 5:30 PM, Dishman Art Museum
Talk 6 PM, Dishman Auditorium

The Department of Art welcomes its next guest lecturer for its Art History Lecture Series on April
18: Azar Rejaie, associate professor and chair of the Department of Arts and Communication at
the University of Houston-Downtown. Dr. Rejaie, a specialist in Italian Renaissance art, will
present a talk titled, “What’s He Doing in There? Photobombing in the Italian Renaissance.”
This lecture will explore her interests in Italian Renaissance artists inserting self-portraits of
themselves in a narrative made for a patron, resulting in paintings and sculptures that allow us to
glimpse the faces of artists such as Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Michelangelo and
Titian among the figures witnessing or even participating in religious and mythological
narratives.
