Gupta’s most recent contemporary abstract series; Isolate, questions the limits of the photographic medium by distorting images through precise color gradient manipulation. This unique process creates an image that relates more closely to first and second generation abstract expressionists such as Mark Rothko, Ellsworth Kelly, and Paul Strand. Gupta’s interest in extreme photographic manipulation was born out of the belief that creation within photography is limitless. This notion stands in stark contrast to the expected function of a camera, which is to truthfully document reality. Isolate overcomes these boundaries of normalcy, and, within it, one will discover a seamless connection between the essential mediums of painting and photography, and unearth impressions provoked by the prevalence of creativity over media constraint.
